Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Safely move trains in the yards and over the road

  • Must be able to climb ladders, board and/or ride freight cars, operate track switches, inspect cars and use radio communications to control train movement

  • Ability to work a non-standard 40-hour work week (train crews are always on call)

  • Be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including snow, ice, rain, cold and heat, and be expected to work various hours, nights, weekends and holidays

  • Must be able to use a computer

  • Must be able to count and compare numbers (example: you might be asked to count the cars on a train during switching)

  • Must be able to solve problems quickly and react to changing conditions on the job

  • Must have strong vision and hearing, including the ability to see and read hand signals from both near and far, distinguish between colors, visually judge the speed and distance of moving objects, see at night, and recognize changes in sounds

  • Must be able to push lift and carry up to 25lbs frequently and up to 50lbs occasionally

  • Must have good balance to regularly step on and off equipment and work from ladders to perform various tasks. Must be able to walk, sit, stand and stoop comfortably

  • Perform other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

  • Must use all equipment, tools, resources and company automobiles in a safe and responsible manner

  • Must use extreme sound judgment when complying and interpreting railroad rules, regulations and instructions

  • Must use good judgment when complying with federal regulations that apply to the operation of trains

  • Must be able to distinguish color signals aspects


  • High School diploma or equivalent

  • Perceived aptitude in the Transportation field and demonstrating a desire to learn required

  • Valid State Driver's License

  • Must have the ability to see near, far, all color, have depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. 100%
