The Physical Education Teacher (aka Gym Specialist) is an active member of the Rehabilitation team to provide physical education direction and support adults with disabilities.


High school graduate (GED). Education or training in physical education, personal trainer preferred or equivalent experience. CPR/First Aid training or willingness to obtain training.

It is preferred that the incumbent have the ability to interact and work cooperatively and effectively. The incumbent must be able to respond to special requests and be flexible in regard to job tasks and duties. The incumbent must have good physical stamina/endurance to stand for long periods of time. The incumbent must also demonstrate empathy and concern for individuals with developmental disabilities and have a passion for working to maximize their independence and personal growth. The Gym Specialist must also conduct self in a professional manner and maintain a professional appearance that enhances the firm’s reputation. The incumbent must be able to work effectively as a team member with the rest of the Rehabilitation staff.


Curriculum Development, Design and Instruction

The Gym Specialist will utilize curriculum that teaches Activities of Daily Living in order to teach assigned consumers how to move towards greater independence. The incumbent will develop new curriculum that meets the objective of teaching assigned consumers daily living skills when necessary. The Gym Specialist will monitor individual learning and facilitate training as needed. The incumbent will also be responsible for implementing individual consumer Program Plans and document progress daily.

Program Documentation, Tracking and Reporting

The Gym Specialist will be responsible for implementing curriculum, creating lesson plans and filling in other paperwork, as required.

Client Care

The Gym Specialist will assist in the implementation of program plans, giving reinforces, providing one-on-one assistance and/or training. The incumbent will assist in the preparation necessary for arrival and end of day client departure. The Gym Specialist will communicate pertinent information to rehabilitation staff and assist program participants with transitioning throughout the day. The incumbent will be an active member of the Possibilities team and will assist team members with all client care.

Research and Industry Involvement

The Gym Specialist is required to research, keep updated by reading trade journals as needed to be aware of trends, theories or initiatives within the industry and instruction techniques. The incumbent will seek out seminars and symposiums for ideas and stay current with trends, tools and resources available. The Gym Specialist must also maintain a working and current knowledge of Department of Developmental Disabilities (DDD) Rules and Regulations and Standards of the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) and a good working knowledge of Goodwill Industries’ policies and procedures.

Physical Education Instruction

The Gym Specialist will be responsible to create, implement and monitor personal exercise programs for each client who attends the Possibilities program. The incumbent will work closely with the Health Services department to ensure all individual limitations for clients are considered and incorporated into personal exercise programs. The incumbent will lead various exercise groups to enhance client’s health and wellness. The incumbent will assist all clients in their scheduled areas to participate in activities and help them achieve their personal goals.

Creating Integration Activities

The Gym Specialist will work closely with the Possibilities team to bring in members of the community to assist with various physical activities, work with volunteers on certain projects and create external projects to reinforce learning which has occurred in the gym. Through this process, the incumbent may be requested to transport clients to various events using company vehicles.

Possibilities Team Support

As a member of the Possibilities Team, the incumbent will participate in staff meetings as directed. The Gym Specialist will also teach proper work habits, interaction and self-help skills through role modeling and programmatic intervention. The incumbent will also fill in for other positions as needed and perform additional duties as assigned by management. The Gym Specialist may be requested to

assist in the provision of ancillary services to program participants: to include necessary help with toileting, transferring, lifting and other hygiene concerns; assist program participants with transitioning smoothly into daily programming.

Client/Program Tracking and Reporting

The Gym Specialist will assist Possibilities staff with completing any assessments and individualized program plans needed on program participants. In addition, the incumbent will monitor program participant’s daily activities and document on the daily log note sheets, and assigned data tracking programs.

Relationship Management

The Gym Specialist will communicate in a timely manner and keep the staff informed of progress, considerations, and pertinent information. The incumbent will deal effectively and calmly with non-routine situations following accepted guidelines and perform other duties as required by management. The incumbent will also communicate with parents or Host Home Providers in notebooks as assigned by the Case Manager.
