This is a non-exempt, temporary, part-time position, limited to 1300 hours annually, under supervision of the Parks and Recreation Supervisors and/or Recreation Coordinator. This is skilled and semi-skilled manual work of average difficulty in the maintenance of the City's ball fields. An employee in this class performs skilled and semi-skilled work in grounds, structures and ball field maintenance and preparation for ball games and practices. The employee will need to operate simple and complex mechanical equipment in the performance of duties. Work is performed under general supervision and with some initiative and independent judgment within established procedures, work methods, and objectives. Work is reviewed through observation while in progress and by result of completed work.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Attend all staff meetings and training sessions, including any state-mandated courses
Responsible for maintaining equipment and supplies
Maintains cleanliness of equipment and facilities
Drags the baseball or softball infield using a field drag machine and builds, repairs and patches holes in pitching mounds, home plate and turf playing field.
Fertilizes the grounds.
Edges the areas surrounding the ball fields, infield/outfield, and removes cuttings.
Top dresses, aerates, verticuts and seeds ball field and landscape areas.
Irrigates ball fields and landscape areas.
Operates different types of rotary and reel mowers to mow, outfields, parking lots, and picnic areas.
Repairs clay, sod, and landscape areas.
Constructs home plate areas.
May spray herbicides and pesticides on the fields utilizing spray tank truck and hand spray units.
Maintains logs of daily maintenance activities to include application rates of chemicals and safety checks.
Completes work order for repair of safety hazards and other needed maintenance.
Lays out and paints foul lines on playing fields using a paint striping machine.
Lays out base lines, foul lines, base blocks/anchors, and pitching mounds using tape measures, line level and string
Lays down base lines with chalk on infields.
Cleans and maintains ball field sheds, stands, and parking lots after practice, games, or any other event.
Removes and stores all equipment used during games.
Performs set-up, stand-by and tear-down functions for games and/or tournaments.
Locks field gates when necessary.
Visually inspect ball field gates/fences daily and make any necessary repairs.
Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Knowledge of turf maintenance and the operation of turf maintenance equipment.
Knowledge of the preparation of recreation and professional athletic fields.
Knowledge of the types and application of pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers.
Knowledge of occupational safety and health hazards and ability to follow prescribed safety precautions.
Knowledge of the proper mixing and preparation of chemicals according to labels and state and federal laws.
Skill in the operation of simple and complex mechanical equipment and irrigation systems.
Lift bags of fertilizer, ball field clay, and seed weighing 50 pounds or more.
Lift spray tanks, tarps, paint cans, and turf maintenance equipment such as draggers and floaters.
Read and write legibly.
Perform manual labor for extended periods under varying climatic conditions.
Perform mathematical calculations required to set up the fields according to game regulations.
Recommend and implement goals and objectives for providing services.
Recommend programs that meet community needs.
Interpret and apply rules and regulations in assigned program areas.
Ensure program compliance with mandated City policies, procedures, rules and regulations.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work and with the public.
In addition to the knowledge, skills and abilities the position requires:
Must be at least 18 years of age
A high school diploma or equivalent is preferred
Have at least one (1) year of turf and/or ball field maintenance experience.
Possess or be able to obtain, by the time of hire, a valid State of Colorado Driver's License.
